Housing with Care survey

The aim of the survey of housing-with-care is to:

  • Add much more detail to schemes already included in EAC’s National Database of Housing for Older People, and;
  • Identify any missing schemes or schemes under construction.

We deliberately took a very broad view of what constitutes housing with care / extra care housing, as our aim is to document and describe all forms and models in a non-judgemental way. In essence, we aim to include all provision described by providers as offering more services than traditional sheltered / retirement housing.

Our 7-page survey questionnaire asks providers to describe their buildings, services and the service users / customers each scheme caters for, and providers who fully complete it are awarded the EAC Quality of Information Mark. To date we have identified over 1,100 schemes across the UK, and as at August 2008, we have detailed survey information on 464 of these. The marathon continues!

Please use our Search for Extra Care Housing to check that we have full details for your schemes.  If we don’t, you will be prompted to download our questionnaire.

Good examples of extra care housing

A study of the design of extra care housing (ECH) is currently reviewing the best examples of ECH. This is a three year research project, EVOLVE (evaluation of older peoples living environments) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, being carried out by The University of Sheffield and PSSRU in partnership with the Housing LIN and EAC. The project will look at the design of ECH and the influence of design on the quality of life of the residents. The aim is to produce a building evaluation tool which reflects best practice that will be of use to commissioners, designers, practitioners and older people in the selection, design, and evaluation of buildings. The tool will be published on the Housing LIN.

The project is particularly interested in:

  • Examples of recent innovatory schemes
  • Examples of remodelled schemes
  • Experience of ‘what works’ in design terms, and what should be avoided
